Grumpy Baker, Marrickville

the_grumpy_baker (8a)There’s a new baker in Marrickville and apparently he’s grumpy. That may well be, but his bread is delicious. I guess if I had to get up at the crack of dawn to bake for hungry Inner Westies, I’d be grumpy too :) Located in the industrial area of Marrickville on Meeks Road, Grumpy Baker houses the bakery out the back, a cafe at the front and a big glass window separates the two areas.

Owner Michael Cthurmer started Grumpy Baker in 2002. With cafes and bakeries already open in  Castle Cove, Vaucluse and Paddington… Marrickville seems to be the perfect choice for a new location. The bread range includes traditional pumpernickel, fig and walnut sourdough, organic carrot loaf, linseed soy and 3-Grain, pugeliese, turkish bread along with a caguettes, ciabatta and more.

The cafe features their freshly baked sourdough breads and a range of pastries and muffins including croissants, pain au chocolat, cheese sticks, fruit scrolls and chocolate brownies. It’s a small space with a couple of tables where you can enjoy a coffee, tea or maybe tuck into one of the delicious looking sandwiches, pies or sausage rolls.
